The Hague Innovators 2016 are:
Noordzeeboerderij, Zonnebrand zonder rommel and Urban Mining with Credits and, in the student category, Edibles! Alderman Karsten Klein awarded these Hague Innovators for their innovative solutions which address the global challenges we face.
Alderman Karsten Klein (Economic Affairs): “Innovations that address global challenges find a sound launching pad in The Hague. It also offers chances for new employment. With The Hague Innovators Challenge contest, the City of The Hague has boosted organisations and students to present new ideas on current global challenges.”
The 1st prize is won by Noordzeeboerderij Scheveningen. The purpose of the Noordzeeboerderij Foundation is to develop sustainable offshore seaweed cultivation. With the 35.000 euro prize money they will set up the first seaweed cultivation nearby Scheveningen’s harbour and process this with local companies. This will create new chances for maritime and agrofood entrepreneurs.
The 2nd prize is won by Zonnebrand Zonder rommel. They received 20.000 euro for the development of a protective sunscreen (50 spf) for specifically babies and toddlers which uses a natural filter instead of chemical filters.
The 3rd prize was awarded to Urban mining with Credits. They received 10.000 euro. With the prize money they will start to recycle plastic and electronic appliances to reuse and repress domestic waste.
The student award went to Edibles. They received 5.000 euro which they will use to develop the online marketplace for unloved food (visual unattractive), which otherwise would end in the garbage bin.
Last year’s Innovator Challenge was won by Seepje, Greenfox and Privacy op Internet. The 1st prize of 30.000 euro went to the developers of Seepje, a 100% natural and Fairtrade product from Nepal which, thanks to the prize money, now also exists in fluid version.
