Wicked problem: Litter in the city, #streetwaste
Expert: Annelies Rebel, projectleader participation & clean, municipality of The Hague
Startup in Residence
After a succesful Startup in Residence program in San Francisco and Amsterdam, The Hague now also invites startups to come up with smart solutions for these ‘wicked’ urban problems. The municipality of The Hague has defined eight quests that need to be solved. Deadline for registration: July 4th.
Litter
Litter is a problem all over the Netherlands, but in The Hague it can also land in the sea and cause Plastic Soup. The solution could be very simple. If everyone visibly picked up 1 piece of litter every day, the problem would be solved within a week. The good news is: there are now all kinds of social initiatives which are trying to turn the tide and encourage people to pick something up themselves (for example, the #zwerfie initiative of Stichting Klean, Trashure Hunt, Supporter van Schoon). But it’s not enough. It’s about status, image, making something cool that’s not cool, yet.
Pick it up
So our question: Develop an approach whereby people who pick up litter have a higher status than someone who doesn’t!
Annelies Rebel:
There’s a secret behind litter. It’s small, dirty, annoying and yet it’s the key to a good feeling and positivity! The challenge is to help yourself and others discover it!
